Obtaining Vital Records

Information available to researchers includes:

  • Birth Records, dating back 1852
  • Death Records, dating back to 1866
  • Marriage Records, dating back to 1846

Users of vital records must do the following:

  • You must present satisfactory proof of identity.
  • You must read these rules and sign the agreement to abide by them.
  • The following are not allowed in the records area:
    • Pens
    • Markers
    • Private copy machines
    • Cameras or cell phones
    • Children under 12
    • Smoking, eating, or drinking
  • Only pencils may be used.
  • Handle all books with care and respect.
  • Return all books to their proper space.
  • Do not place the books on top of each other.
  • Do not write in the books.
  • Only one verbal warning will be given. Continued violators will be asked to leave the office.

Researcher Policies

Policies for researchers:

  • Research must be performed between 8:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. daily.
  • Two to three people are allowed in the research area at one time. This number will be determined by staff based on work surface availability.
  • Register of Deeds Department staff has first priority use of all indexes and records to conduct their daily business.
  • You assume all responsibility for conforming to the laws of library and literary property rights which may be involved in your use of the vital record.
  • The use of certain records and indexes is restricted by Wisconsin Statute. This office reserves the right to restrict access to records which are not arranged or being arranged, records which are confidential or contain confidential information.
